2009 Benefits Open Enrollment

Building Your Best Benefits: Some Assembly Required

It's time again for employees and retirees to learn about and make selections for their benefits programs which will be effective on January 1, 2009. Our Open Enrollment theme this year is "Building Your Best Benefits: Some Assembly Required." At this point, we have no major benefits plan changes or additions for 2009, so our goal is to provide vital information to all employees so that they can make the best benefit selections for themselves and their dependents from our menu of offerings. Meetings will be held between Tuesday, September 16 and Thursday, October 9.
This year, meetings will be held at 10 new locations, and employees are encouraged to attend any one of these meetings closest to their worksites. Wellness will offer free lab screenings (blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and percent body fat and hip-to-waist ratio) at the morning meetings. Additionally, information will be provided at all meetings to help employees take
charge of their health and well-being. Open Enrollment for employees starts on October 13 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on October 23,2008. All employees must go online and complete their selections, even if they choose not to participate in any benefits during calendar year 2009.

Plant A Tree

In 2007, Endeavour Elementary kindergarten students planted two lemon trees in their garden after collecting donations in order to participate in the Global Johnny Appleseed Project.  This year, the kindergarten students at Endeavour would like to invite your school to join in this project by raising money and planting fruit trees at your school or nearby community areas.  The Global Johnny Appleseed project has a mission to bring the issues of conservation and global warming into the classrooms of the world.  The number one goal of this project is to encourage every school in the United States or World to plant at least two apple (or regional fruit) trees.

The benefits of this project include:

     Beautification of the environment

     Reduction of carbon dioxide

     A source of food

     Learning experiences

     Contribution to heritage

For more information including a PowerPoint presentation, lesson plan ideas, background information on both the project and Johnny Appleseed and to register for this project please visit www.globaljohnnyappleseedproject.org.  This project runs from September until "harvest."  Last year, Endeavour kindergarteners collected money starting on Johnny Appleseed's September 26 birthday and throughout October.  They planted their lemon trees on November 1, 2007.  This year, they are planning to follow a similar schedule.  Please Join In!

To help Endeavour teachers track the amount of participation in Brevard County, or for questions or comments, please email Barbara Wilcox at wilcox.barbara@brevardschools.org.  Please submit the date joined, money raised, number of trees planted and interest in joining again next year.  Please also share any photos of your involvement as well.

Submitted by Endeavour's Kindergarten Team:  Jessica Holloman, Tegan Litt, Susan Harrison, Carol Post and Barbara Wilcox

 Cell Phone Savings

Steve Muzzy, Assistant Superintendent for Information Technology, has reported good news with the recent completed wireless communications service agreement with Sprint Solutions.  As you may recall, the board approved the agreement in the Spring of 2008.  The district moved to a centralized procurement and management process versus the previous process in which each school and department negotiated individual agreements with providers.  A review of the first completed quarter under the new consolidated agreement has resulted in a savings of 28% and is projected to produce hard dollar savings in excess of $80,000 per year!

These savings are being realized with the district having 33 more devices over the previous year. Currently the district has 485 active service plans for cellular phones and data services.  We also have an additional 95 cellular phones in a "pay as you go" plan with a cost of $0.06 per minute.

While the savings are tremendous, there is more good news.  There are a number of additional services and benefits the district is receiving as a result of this improved process.  They include:

  • An allocation of $138,000 for wireless technology enhancements to improve signal coverage in our district facilities.  The primary focus of these enhancements are schools designated as storm shelters.  Viera High, Mims Elementary and Sunrise Elementary will receive these enhancements with $54,000 of upgrades for future needs.  These enhancements will improve the cellular service to our shelter occupants.

  • Sprint has developed an employee discount program that allows BPS employees to receive a 15% discount off of monthly access plans.  Matthew Estes is the Sprint Account Representative assigned to BPS and can be reached at matthew.estes@Sprint.com for further information.

  • Transportation Services and our Maintenance department are exploring the possibility of using the Sprint devices to implement GPS solutions for vehicle tracking to assist us in our goals of improving student safety and service dispatching.  Study and testing of these systems are ongoing at this time.

  • Sprint is also offering a service called WeatherBug Protect that allows the National Weather Service severe weather alerts to be sent directly to Sprint handsets that provides the potential for immediate notification to school and departmental staff members.

  • A district team also plans to investigate the feasibility of utilizing text messaging for emergency communications.

Commendations go out to Chip Harrison, Tom Fitzgerald and Kathy Arvonio for their work in implementing this process improvement and for delivering cost savings and improved services to the district.  If you have any questions, please contact Steve Muzzy at 633-1000, extension 700.

SNEAKERS@WORK DAY

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month.  To increase awareness of this disease, Brevard Public Schools is having a dress-down-in your sneakers day on Friday, Sept. 19.  For a $5.00 donation, supporters will receive a fun pair of blue shoe laces to sport in their sneakers…men and women alike.

If you work at the School Board Building (ESF) and would like to donate, the Brevard Schools Foundation Office will have the shoe laces.  Any other school or worksite can contact the Wellness program directly at 632-1770 ext. 28235 or email Sandy at Gibbons.Sandra@brevardschools.org and arrange to send us your donation made payable to American Prostate Cancer Initiative (APCI) to Wellness at Viera High to receive the blue shoe laces

One hundred percent (100%) of every dollar raised through SNEAKERS@WORK DAY goes directly to American Prostate Cancer Initiative to promote prostate Cancer awareness, patient education, advocacy, and research programs.

The American Prostate Cancer Initiative is a 501 (c)(3) organization. The donation may be tax-deductible, please consult your tax preparer for information about this matter (federal tax ID# is: 75-3193832).

Additionally, the Wellness Department will be hosting free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening tests at the School Board Building on Friday, Sept. 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Retirement Conference Room in Pod 2.

Screening for prostate cancer can be performed quickly and easily using the PSA blood test.  PSA is a protein produced by the prostate and released in very small amounts into the bloodstream. When there iss a problem with the prostate, such as when prostate cancer develops and grows, more and more PSA is released, until it reaches a level where it can be easily detected in the blood. During a PSA test, a small amount of blood is drawn from the arm and the level of PSA is measured. PSA levels under 4 ng/mL are usually considered "normal," results over 10 ng/mL are usually considered "high," and results between 4 and 10 ng/mL are usually considered "intermediate."

If you can not attend, and would like a voucher for the PSA screening, please contact the Wellness Department,  A voucher to take this simple blood test at any Wuesthoff lab can be sent via courier.

The district Food 4 Thought Food Drive is complete!  Many schools and departments  developed creative programs for collecting the most donations possible.  Edgewood Jr./Sr. High created service learning projects for their students. MILA Elementary partnered with BJ's Wholesale Club in Merritt Island to have donation boxes set up in their stores and Cocoa High partnered with Wal-Mart.  The HR department created "meals in a bag" and the ESF Food Service assembled a Food 4 Thought Food Pyramid in the cafeteria (as pictured here). Thank you, one and all who made this drive a success!

Congratulations Edgewood and Freedom 7

Brevard Public Schools was notified today that two district schools were named by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings as 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools. Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School and Freedom 7 Elementary School are two of 320 schools in the United States and only 16 schools (13 public and three private) in Florida to win this honor.

Florida Today School of the Week

Florida Today has started a new feature called the School of the Week to take the place of the Education Theme Page that runs every Tuesday. The first feature ran Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Florida Today is asking schools to nominate themselves. To honor them, schools will receive coverage (a story, photos, video of their accomplishments) and the "School of the Week" designation.

Here are the rules ....

School principals must submit a 300-word essay on why they should be nominated as School of the Week. Mainly, Florida Today is looking for schools that have made great accomplishments, whether it be academically, charity work or a particular student, administrator or program that stands out. The essay itself can be from the students, the principal, a class or a teacher. Florida Today will then pick one school randomly and write about its accomplishments.

Part of the feature would be a one-on-one with the principal, a photo or video gallery and a story about what makes the school so great. Florida Today will also send the school a certificate as a final congratulations so that they can hang it up for all to see.

Nominations may be submitted to Florida Today writer Keilani Best: kbest@floridatoday.com

Brevard Schools Foundation

Funds from Boeing

Principals, we have been asked to once again submit a grant request to the Boeing Employees Community Fund of Florida for a critical need at your school.  The Foundation will need ONE request from each school submitted to the Brevard Schools Foundation as soon as possible but not later than Wednesday, October 1, 2008.  Please have a representative from your school email the following information to Lynn Clifton at clifton.lynn@brevardschools.org:

  • Name of Project: A short name for the project for which you are requesting funding

  • Project Coordinator: The name of teacher/administrator responsible for this request

  • Phone Number: A phone number where Boeing could call to ask the project coordinator some questions if necessary

  • Project Description: A short description of what the project is, what supplies are needed and who will benefit

  • Why this is a critical need: A short explanation of why this is a critical need at your school.  In the past, schools have submitted requests supplemental or what Boeing called “luxury” items.  Please carefully consider your request to determine if it is critical.  The Boeing committee tends to look for things that are basic.  Some examples include math manipulatives for students or shelving for a teacher who has none in the classroom.

  • Total project budget: A brief budget of total costs.  Please do not itemize piece by piece.  For example, 10 accelerated reader books is sufficient and you do not have to list the title of each book to be purchased.

  • Amount Requested: A single figure is required here.  Note:  Boeing rarely grants requests of over $1,000.  Last year, the majority of grants were in the $500 range.

  • If the total amount is not being requested from Boeing, what are your other funding sources:  In past years Boeing granted very few grants for the full amount requested.  It is important that they know that you have a source of funds that could be used if they decide not to fund the full amount of your request.

Wellness Note

Grab Hold of Your Health!

Coulda...Shoulda...Woulda...Some day?  If you really want to grab hold of your health and improve your wellbeing, then get organized about it.  Pull out a notebook, look at your calendar and make some plans that will change your life, allow you to achieve your goals, and who knows -- along the way --  make you happier.

1. Organize your time so that every day there is enough time (30 minutes at least) for physical exercise. You should know yourself well enough to know if you have to get it done first thing in the morning, or if later in the day is really when you’ll have the energy to exercise.

2. Clean out your kitchen. If it’s not healthy, get rid of it.  Chances are excellent that you know what you need to dispose of, so do it.

3. Plan your meals -- look for healthy recipes, find healthy restaurants, and make time in your week for a healthy grocery shop.

4. Make time to sit and enjoy your new delicious fare. Relax when you are eating, chew your food thoroughly, and digest what this is really about.

5. Give yourself a chance to shine: don’t get on the scale every day, instead, exercise and eat right for 14 days and then check out how your clothes are fitting, how you look in the mirror and what you weigh.

6. Get enough sleep. This is the most fantastic and most under-rated fountain of youth and weight loss-fitness tool.  Shoot for eight hours of sleep, and you’ll see be amazed with your energy.

We invite you to visit the our website at http://wellness.brevardschools.org
